Update: Commenter GE suggests that copying and pasting your entire document into a new file may also get rid of the problem.

REMOVE EXTRA SPACES IN WORD FOR MAC FOR MAC OS
In Word for Mac OS X, click the paragraph icon in the Standard toolbar.
In the drop-down list that appears in the Footnotes area, choose Footnote Separator. In Word for Windows, on the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the paragraph icon. Select the cells that have the names with double space characters With the data selected, hold the Control key and press the H key (or Command + H if using Mac).(On Macs, go to View > Footnotes – thanks to commenter Gerard for spotting this) Please press Ctrl + H to display the Find and Replace dialog. If you want to apply Find and Replace function to remove extra spaces, you can do it by follows. Go to the References tab and click Show Footnotes. Remove extra spaces between words with Find and Replace function.
Turns out this is caused by something called a footnote separator which you have to go to Draft mode (under the View tab in MS Word 07 and up) to edit it. You can also remove extra space by dragging up. It was wreaking havoc on my formatting and turning all my tables into multiple-paged impossible-to-read clusters of cells. Available on Mac, and as a separate app for iPhone and iPad, Keep It is the destination for all those.
